The world may not be prepared for full contact wind up toys, but they’re here.  These wind up Sumo wrestlers lack the honor and pride that you’d traditionally find with such athletes, but they also don’t eat a 6,000 calorie diet each day, so they are a whole lot cheaper to keep around.  By our estimates, they provide 82% of the entertainment value of live Sumo wrestling. A toy that definitely requires a team of participants, both of these little guys require a steady wind up in order to reach their full potential. For reasons that were not clear in the beginning, the sumo “mat” has tiny magnified spots a la a sea monkey tank.  After our “match” began it was clear:  the tiny magnified spots prevented both wrestlers from crashing off the mat prematurely.  Once you set your wrestlers on the mat, the fun begins.  You would be surprised how amusing it is watching two plastic wind up toys have a battle to see which one will fall off the mat face down first.  The winning wrestler then has the mat to himself to run a few victory laps, until his wind runs out.

Overall, this is probably not a product that we need.  But for the minutes of joyful entertainment it provided us with, I’d definitely say it’s one worth purchasing. We’d recommend enhancing the experience by turning Wind Up Sumo Wrestling into a drinking game. Some suggestions include: take a shot for each victory lap, take a shot when a user lands face first, and take a shot when a match ends without a winner. The possibilities are endless…have some fun!
